Term 3 Newsletter

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Learners in Room 2.

Welcome back. I hope you have had a restful break and had lots of fun in the snow.

This term we have an exciting programme ahead. This includes:

• Pubertal Change Inquiry Unit. This unit will include the physical and emotional changes that happen during puberty, positive strategies on how to deal with these and cybersafety. 
• AVAILL Reading Programme. This is a multimedia reading programme which is highly engaging and very successful in terms of achievement.In mathematics we will be revisiting the number strands and mathematics and moving into measurement later in the term.
• For writing we are moving into writing narratives.
• Year 8s have a big term of fundraising and preparation for the Wellington Trip in Term 4
• The Friday Winter Sport programme will be continuing
• Winter Sports Tournaments
• Cantamaths Problem Solving Team will be competing
• The CARE value we will be focussing on for this term will be RESPECT. This will include looking at how do we show respect for ourselves, others, and our communities.

Friday Sport

Hi Guys


Friday sport is now all organised and ready to go. Hopefully we will get a fine day for tomorrow. There have been many question around what is happening with the students who are remaining behind. As previously stated in the sports notices, all schools have been restricted in the number of teams they can enter due to the damage the February Earthquake has caused to Hagley Park. 


Bryan Brown (Oaklands School's Sports Coordinator) has been arranging with Halswell School a sports competition for those children remaining behind. Halswell School is in a similar position to us with 100+ students not going to Friday Sport. 

This is a very quick run down of how it will work.

• Oaklands and Halswell have roughly the same amount of students left over (100 - 120). Each school will split their left overs into 6 teams of yr 5-8 mixed teams,(about 20-24).
• The 6 teams from Halswell will play a rotation of sports against the 6 teams from Oaklands.
• The sports are netball, football,  rippa rugby, volleyball, hockey and  basketball.
• This will be run as a competition - 5pts for a win, 3pts for a draw and 1pt for a loss with a further 2pts for any team that shows fair play,(sportsmanship) on the day.
• The interchange between Halswell and Oaklands will only happen every second week to allow the students to have skill sessions at school.
• Volleyball will be played at Halswell as well as one netball game.
• Basketball will be played at Oaklands as well as one netball game.
• Hockey, football and rippa rugby will be at the domain. 

Our aim is to have all students involved in a meaningful sport competition in this difficult time

Term 2 Class Newsletter

Term 2 is upon us!

I trust that you have had an excellent holiday. I have spent the last week putting together the class programme for the term. I am very excited by this and can't wait for the term too start!

Term Overview
A major component of this term will be our investigation around the impact of the Christchurch Earthquake. At the end of last term the class decided that we would redesign the Christchurch CBD and submit it to the City Council for consideration. There is further explanation here. Also we are visiting the Christchurch CBD on Wednesday and the $5.50 and permission form need to be returned before then.
Winter Sports start this term in week 3. Unfortunately due to earthquake damage we won't be able to take as many teams as we have previously. There will be more information coming out about this.
This term Room 2 will be focusing their attention around excellence. This will comprise of children learning about striving for their "personal best" and persistence.

E-Portfolios
This week your child will design their e-portfolio and begin sharing their learning on it. Last term the students set some learning goals. These will be accessible on the e-portfolio as well as updates on how the students are going at achieving these. In addition, over the next couple of weeks I will start adding some of the results from the standardised testing that was conducted in term 1. When something new is added to your child's e-portfolio you will be alerted via email. We will be having a Parent evening around the e-portfolios in week 3/4 of this term for parents.

There have been lots of questions from parents and students around homework. Here is some Informationthat should answer most of your questions

* year 8 $50 deposit for Wellington Camp
