Inquiry Unit

Over the last couple of days Room 2 has been doing a variety of activities around the Christchurch Earthquake. This has included:

  • liquefaction experiment
  • looking at photos and video of the damage to the city center.
  • learning about building design
  • learning about how a building gets constructed.
From this learning the children have decided they are going to apply use this new knowledge to make a difference to other people's lives by redesigning the CBD. The children are very excited by this.

This will become a major unit of work for the rest of this term and next term. Our aim is to redesign the CBD so that it is an earthquake resistant city and submit our ideas to the Christchurch City Council.

This unit has a real focus on on Science and Technology. The CARE Value that we will be integrating as part of this will be Community. The deep understandings that will be developed throughout the unit are:
  1. Understanding the cause of earthquakes can help us to be prepared for their effects.
  2. We can participate and contribute in the wider community to make a difference
